Many women insist that their eating desires change during their period. A recent study indicates this to be true. The women studies ate up to 500 calories a dau more than normal for thje 10 days preceding their period. The pattern persisted during their period and rapidly returned to normal over the 10 days following their periods.
When allowed to chose the food they wanted to satisfy their increased food desires, women universally chose carbohydrates! Some scientists beleive that high precycle estrogen causes carbohydrate cravings.
Women also have higher metabolic needs both before and during their periods. They burn 350-500 extra calories a day during this time. Women usually try to eat and drink less before and during their period because they feel bloated and fat. If they deprive themselves, however, they get an extra strong craving for carbohydrates. Doctors I have talked too recommend that women who are approaching menstruation eat an extra bran muffin each day for breakfast. This will supply extra carbohydrates and should help control the urg for sweets the rest of the day.
Now that we have the mother munchie problem solved,we can address the teenagers who like to watch TV and Munch.
Television viewing is a major contributor to weight gain in teenagers. TV is fattening in two ways: through the calories consumed (mostly junk food) while viewing; through the calories not burned by sitting around instead of playing ball, running, etc.;and through the development of sedentary habits that may contribute to adult obesity.
If your teenager spends too much time in front of the tube, add more physical activity-walking, bike riding, sports-to their daily routine. Avoid buying junk foods and sweets, and go for nutrition instead. You don't have to change their whole lifestyle to get on the right track, but the little changes they make now, such as cutting a mere 50 calories a day from their diet, may reward them for the rest of their life.
Help your teen develop healthy eating and exercise habits. Plan nutritious meals and snacks, and again, don't keep junk food around the house
